“Maintenance” is one of those words that you either love or hate. If you are someone who understands that good products can last a long time with care and attention, then maintenance is something you love. It pays you back year after year.
If you’re someone who likes to “set it and forget it” then maintenance isn’t something you like.
In HVAC you have no choice. Systems need maintenance. You don’t want to mess with that. Coils need to be cleaned. Filters changed. Balanced, etc. If you don’t do it you will have problems and many times these problems cost money – a lot of money.
There was an article in the online version of theNEWS (and HVAC trade publication) today talking about Maintenance. There were a lot of words of wisdom, but a few really stuck out to me. You can read the complete article here.
- “Service contracts are important due to the fact that they give the consumer a twice-a-year chance to catch a small issue before it becomes a large one”
- “Poorly serviced systems, or those not serviced at all, will have more breakdowns and need replacements sooner”
- “Our critical refrigeration customers have millions of dollars in products cooled by these refrigerators and these systems simply can’t go down”
These stuck out to me because they represent common sense approaches to maintenance. If you choose not to maintain something like your HVAC system, you are actually making a choice. Don’t complain when it breaks.And don’t complain when you get the bill.
The last bullet point hit home in an article I just read right now. Now this may be a critical system failure, but lack of maintenance is a high suspect on this. Now the world has lost a valuable resource.
